As my husband and I navigate through the process of recovery and seek to redefine and rebuild our lives within everything we are facing, this is what is on my mind.
The genuine need for medication whether for physical or mental issues should never be labeled as an addiction.
When you are caring for someone who is struggling, know that you are not required to abandon yourself. Eat, drink water, rest. Your well-being is important.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and support. You are strong, and you don’t have to carry everything alone.
To keep hope, to see genuine good in the midst of difficulties is not delusion nor is it a refusal to face reality. Know the situation and do the work you need to do, and know that the hope you feel is a source of strength as you keep moving forward.
You do not have to suffer in order to prove your strength. It is true that we must actively, through the choices we make, participate in our own healing process; however, if a medication or combination of such isn’t working, seek help. You are not a burden.
Healthcare is not a one-and-done type of thing. There is no shame in asking for help as much and as many times as you need.
Don’t force yourself to feel or act any certain way. Express sadness and anger. Express joy, hope, and gratitude. Just because you and others don’t understand your feelings or the combination of them doesn’t mean that your feelings are wrong. Allow your feelings to exist without criticizing yourself. You are enough.
Thank you for reading and supporting my work. May our combined voices and actions serve to end any stigma existing around mental health. You deserve to love and value yourself. You deserve wellness, peace, and joy. May we be each other’s source of strength and hope.
Have a wonderful day,
Susannah
